Freddy Krueger Glove : What Made Freddy Krueger So Scary?

It’s simple to give your Halloween costume the ultimate x factor. Freddy Krueger is one of the most macabre characters in the history of horror. Apart from the totally gruesome burned face with a spine chilling evil grin, the Freddy krueger glove is what really created his signature.

Made of worn leather and the fingers replaced by razor sharp tallons of steel blades, Freddy would stalk his victims in their sleep and slash them to death – killing them in real life.

Everyone has to sleep, some more than others, but that aside we all need it otherwise we would go insane. Our dreams can be very real and for some it’s impossible to differentiate between dream and reality when we are asleep. Scientific studies have proved that the human brain is not capable of distinguising what is dream and reality. It’s only the fact that we usually re-enter out conscious state whilst in our beds that gives us the contrast.

To know that there is a monster called Freddy Krueger who was, in living form, a child murderer, stalking you in your dreams is a terrifying thought. Have you ever had a nightmare and tried to wake up?…it’s really hard.

Once asleep, Freddy would feed on your fear and become stronger. Nowhere was safe! Quite often the first part of Freddy you would see was his glove. It could appear as a shadow on the wall, rise up in the bath tub, rip through sheets on your bed or sometimes you would hear it’s chilling screaching as it scaped against walls or metal.

The glove was his calling card and the part of Freddy that was the most feared. Attached to a seemingly unstoppable, super powerful and limitlessly sadistic maniac that was Hell bent on using this knife wielding glove to slash you to death in the most horrific and torturous way possible. Quite often, he would play and toy with his victims, laughing and enjoying the pain and fear he was inflicting before the final act of death was administered.

These attributes, created by Wes Craven have won this psychotic dream stalker the title of 40th out of the top 100 heroes and villains by the American Film Institute. It has also gave Robert Englund, the actor who played Freddy Krueger, the Saturn Award nominee for best supporting actor in 1987 and 1988.

Over twenty years later and sales of the Nightmare On Elm Street films are still going strong. Such was the terror created in the making of this film. The Freddy Krueger glove being the focal point of this time tested classic horror.

Freddy Krueger Glove: How The Nightmare Began

Can you imagine anything more terrifying than a gruesomly disfigured dream stalker coming after you in your dreams wielding a glove with razor sharp, flesh slashing knives attached to it? That’s the horror of the Freddy Krueger glove which has become the signature weapon throughout all of the Nightmare On Elm Street Movies.

Freddy Krueger made his first screen debut back in 1984 in the blockbuster horror movie – A Nightmare on Elm Street which was created by Wes Craven. The main character whom the film was based around was Freddy Krueger, a vicious child murderer who would slash and kill his child victims with a home made glove that sported sharp blades instead of fingers.

The story began with Fredderick Charles Krueger who lived in the sleepy American town of Springfield. There had been several children murdered which had shook the close community. Freddy was caught and arrested by Police but to the town peoples outrage he managed to escape jail on a technicality.

Emotions were running high within the community and a group of local parents decided to avenge the childrens’ murders by forming a vigilante group to seek justice. The parents tracked Freddy to where he lived on 1428, Elm Street, trapped him in his house, doused it with petrol and then set fire to it.

The parents and all the community thought that was the end of Freddy Krueger, and all of them believed that he had perished in the fire. But what followed was only the start of Freddys’ killing spree. The fear that he had created, enabled him to become an undead who would then go on to stalk children in their dreams. Powerless in human form but in dream form would enter into childrens’ dreams, horribly burned and using his Freddy Krueger Glove of knives as his murder weapon. If he succeeded in killing them in their dreams then they would die in real life.

The more affraid he made them in their dreams, the more energy and power it gave him.

The first movie was A Nightmare On Elm Street and was based around Freddy determined to enter into the dreams of Nancy Thompson and her friends. He managed to kill all of them except Nancy who went on to star in the movies’ sequel.
